What Types of Deck Materials are Best for Michigan?

Over the past decade there are a number of new decking materials that have been added to the market much like siding materials. Some of the older more used decking materials haven’t changed but some of the newer materials keep evolving. Here is a breakdown of the decking materials that I will be going over in this article:

  • Pressure Treated Lumber for Deck Building
  • Cedar or Redwood Deck Materials
  • Composite Decking
  • Metal Decking

As you can see there are at least 4 choices that are very popular today. And while these decking materials may perform well in other areas, it may not be a great choice for persons in Michigan. I’ll explain why with each type of decking materials below.

What Types of Deck Materials are Best for Michigan?

Pressure Treated Lumber for Deck Building

Using pressure treated lumber is by far the most inexpensive way to build a deck. It’s readily available and the cost is less than almost all the other decking materials. Wooden decking such as this can withstand the harsh climate and rain in Michigan because it is treated with a chemical that doesn’t allow the water to rot the wood. While this may seem like a good idea it’s also not a good idea to walk on this deck barefoot during the Summer because of those chemicals. Another problem that you may have with pressure treated lumber is that it can warp and crack. If the deck is not installed correctly, the wood may start to warp in ways and break causing a dangerous situation.

Cedar or Redwood Decking Materials

If you must have wooden materials for your deck and you don’t want to use pressure treated lumber then consider getting Cedar or Redwood decking materials. These two types of wood can withstand the onslaught of weather in Michigan. They also don’t have any chemical additives like pressure treated lumber. This can truly help ease your mind when your kids are playing on a summer day. The problem with these types of decking materials however is that it’s expensive. It’s also a risk of warping and cracking just like pressure treated lumber. Any wood source such as this will have these same flaws and possible problems. In order to avoid them you’ll need a man-made material for your home’s deck.

Composite Decking Materials

For the last decade many home owners have been installing composite materials for their deck. Made from materials that are usually recycled the composite materials for your decking does not have any of the problems of traditional wooden decking materials. The composite decking materials can be made in wood grain designs and come in a variety of colors. The best part of this type of decking is that it is completely uniform and your deck will look great. It can also withstand weather here in Michigan as well. Composite decking also doesn’t require re-sealing each year and once it’s installed it can last for decades. The price for this decking is typically higher than wooden choices but usually comes with a long time guarantee and warranty. Metal Decking for Residential Homes

Most metal decking is made from aluminum planks and may contain patterns or designs to keep people from slipping on them. This type of material on your deck in Michigan can be dangerous in Winter when ice and snow start to pile up. I would advise against using metal decking in Michigan if you can avoid it.
